This artist designed residence and studio space was completed by an artist/designer in 2001 in collaboration with architect Eric Chase.  Built on 7.1 acres of property on the granite coast of Deer Isle, Maine, the location of this sprawling 3,500 square foot house provides a spectacular setting for it’s contemporary Scandinavian interior.

The Swedish design emphasizes light and spaciousness.  The rooms are elegant, bright and expansive.  Light floods the house throughout the day through custom made Swedish doors and windows located on three sides of all major rooms.   There is extensive use of wood in the house including floors, beamed ceilings milled from wood from the site and oak and maple cabinetry completed by a Swedish joiner and the artist.  The striking staircase uses slotted wood and geometric pattern to lead to the second floor and a vast multipurpose room with cathedral ceilings and built in bookshelves.

This residence includes all the amenities for creative country living.  The open kitchen is designed for professional entertaining and has a large restaurant stove, energy efficient appliances, a food pantry, and an island with marble countertop ideal for baking. Windows in the adjoining living room provide a panoramic view of the lush forest and granite ledge while the porcelain woodstove keeps the house cozy even in cold winter months.

Originally designed by the artist/owner as a residence and studio space, the L-shaped home contains multiple loft-like rooms that could accommodate any number of creative or practical ventures.  The home contains four private bedrooms with unique character, two baths, and a first-floor laundry area.

The house is surrounded on all sides by scenic Maine woods and is a mere four-minute walk to the tidal shoreline on the Atlantic where swimming, kayaking, canoeing and hiking are favorite activities.  For local entertainment and dining, it is just a quick drive to the towns of Stonington and Deer Isle.

All utility systems included in the house are new from 2001.  The full basement is dry and the furnace is a high quality energy-efficient German Budherus. The house is well insulated for Maine winters.
